Premiere: Tree Machines’ ‘Fucking Off Today’ Is the Best New Rock Song of the Year So Far

“The original idea behind the words ‘fucking off today’ is based on our former band being ‘off,'” Douglas Woolridge of the Lawrence, Kansas-based duo Tree Machines says of their song “Fucking Off Today.” “We weren’t clicking together as a group. We’d lost touch with why we made music together in the first place.”

It’s an anthem of the calculatedly wasted, with an intensity and immediacy in the guitar crescendos that contrasts the post-partying mindset it details among a generation of club kids. It also happens to be my favorite new rock song I’ve heard so far this year.

“The rest of the lyrics and concept behind the track have to do with what Patrick Aubry and I were seeing at EDM shows we while working in lighting production. A lot of young kids packed in tight. Generally on drugs and loving every minute of it. Sweat pouring down their faces. Guys spinning round and round with lights on a string, girls with hula hoops. People running in and out of trashed bathrooms. It’s nothing against the idea of going to a show to have a good time, it’s more a reflection on the morning after: hungover, strung-out, and confused.”

Tree Machines debut EP is out on March 31.
