While the lyrics of “Valentine”, the song from California duo Linus Young, are concerned with the traditional misgivings and displacement of love, the lyric video itself plays out more as a testament to a love affair with music. The closeup shots of a spinning record are entrancing, with the words emerging from the grooves like apparitions. “Oh I can follow through but there’s nothing that’s gonna make me be with you. Every day’s a struggle, baby,” the duo of Joseph Walker and Iris sing over a crisp, upfront drum beat, and reverberating, understated guitars.
“This is not your typical valentine,” Walker explains of the song from their album Category 5, which found itself on Spotify’s Best Songs of 2014 You Haven’t Heard…Yet list.

“It’s written with love but it’s a story about someone else you have been with, and at the time it is mesmerizing you know who your true love is.”
