Actually, that headline is probably a little bit misleading. The worst response to Todd Akin’s wack-a-doodle biology lesson about a female body’s ability to stop pregnancy in the event of “legitimate rape” (in case you missed it dude basically confused a woman’s body with a Gundam) probably belongs to another Republican running for senate, Tom Smith, who compared rape to having a baby out of wedlock, but a joke made by Lost creator Damon Lindelof on Tuesday is pretty gross as well. Lindelof Tweeted the following:
I hope the strippers in Tampa are ready for an influx of legitamacy.
Which, at the time of this post got about 58 retweets and 20 favorites, presumably from people who are really into rape jokes that are screwed up on two levels. First, it’s pretty awful to classify a bunch of people (attendees of the Republican National Convention) as potential rapists, even if you think their views come from a place that is informed by privilege/devoid of empathy for people whose lives are different than their own, and awful for the country. Second, I’m pretty sure that sex workers everywhere are pretty much not cool with jokes about sexually assaulting them. I would’ve expected more sensitivity from the dude who gave us the most tearful television protagonist in recent memory.
