No one would ever deny that Gossip’s Beth Ditto has brought a lot of color to the world during her time in the public eye. It’s no wonder, then, that the music video for “Perfect World,” from the band’s upcoming A Joyful Noise (sorry, Dolly fans — not related to the movie), renders that idea so literally. At the start, Ditto and her bandmates are living a Pleasantville-inspired sepia-toned existence, looking very gloomy inside of some dilapidated cathedral. But as the song builds up to increasing levels of anthemic glory the world begins to get a little brighter, with a swirl of colors slowly popping into existence. By the end, there’s enough kaleidoscopic day-glo to impress even the most ardent Lisa Frank fan, all while Ditto belts out the jams in a range of Morticia-meets-Marilyn outfits.

Speaking to Annie Mac on the BBC earlier this month, Ditto said that A Joyful Noise is a more mature effort from the band. “It sounds grown-up and sad,” she said. “I love sad songs. They say so much. I love country music but even the happy songs sound really sad.” There’s an element of that to be heard in “Perfect World,” which blows up its melancholy sentiment to bombastic heights as though to drown out the bad vibes with some kind of joyful noise, if you’ll connect the dots so neatly. Which we can, and we will. A Joyful Noise is out on May 22.
