This Story About New York Rich Kids Holding a Séance is All You Need Today

The Dakota in New York

What do you get the kid who has everything? A ghost, apparently. According to an instantly classic New York Times Style section piece, the hottest trend among the young uptown set is conjuring the dead and boy oh boy are the details delicious.

The piece focuses on a bunch of designer-clad kids trying to summon the ghost of composer Leonard Bernstein, who once inhabited one of their parent’s apartments at the Dakota on Central Park West. Our hosts are Larry Milstein, 22, and sister Toby, 24, whose parents were worth an estimated $3.1 billion in 2015. NBD.

So what do rich kids wear to a séance? Princess Noor Pahlavi, the granddaughter of the late shah, sets the tone by wearing “a short black leather Mugler dress and Saint Laurent heels.” She also “brought cheese.” This description of host Larry’s fit is my favorite:

“Mr. Milstein, who graduated from Yale in May, paired a green Fendi blazer with a Club Monaco top, Rag & Bone trousers and Gucci fur-lined leather slippers, personalized with tiger appliqués. A light coating of tinted foundation smoothed out his cheeks and forehead.”

Taking cues from the E! show Hollywood Medium, they proceeded to get down to business.

“To set the séance mood, a grapefruit-and-cucumber Tocca candle scented the air, as a candelabrum flickered dramatically on the piano. Crystal ice buckets chilled mini-Champagne splits alongside a bottle of Jack Daniel’s and an arrangement of pastel macarons.”

So how does one contact Leonard Bernstein? By singing songs around a Steinway piano, of course.

“The group touched glasses, and, accompanied by Mr. Peglar on piano, began a medley that included Mr. Bernstein’s “Maria” from “West Side Story, “Imagine” by John Lennon, and, playing along with the evening’s theme, Taylor Swift’s “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever,” recently popularized by Zayn Malik.”

This is straight out of an episode of Gossip Girl and I’m living for it. Please, for the love of god, invite me next time.
