In Attendance: Zaher Saleh Examines Identity in ‘War Within’

+

In honor of Pride, Zirkova One+Together, Visionaire and Grindr have teamed up to present director Zaher Saleh’s newest short film, War Within. Highlighting the struggles of LGBTQ+ individuals in the Middle East, the film explores the turbulent inner-world of a Muslim gay man as he grapples with his sexuality, faith and family. With a voice-over praying above dark vignettes of the lead character’s personal turmoil, Saleh shows the man’s continuous efforts to reconcile his identity with his religion. Through the film and event, Saleh hoped to shed light on the all too universal struggle of LGBTQ+ people and their quest for acceptance.

At the premiere last Wednesday, we also saw NYC nightlife icons, Ladyfag, Sophia Lamar and Connie Flemming, as they debuted the event’s opening film, I Am Mr. Gay Syria. Directed by Ahmed Ibrahim, and produced by Visionaire, the comedic short is meant to raise awareness for five Mr. Gay Syria contestants who are currently trying to gain asylum.
