Things we now know about singer-songerwriter Zola Jesus after giving her the BULLETT questionnaire: She’ll smack a bitch up, she’s no longer welcome in most Swiss porn shops, and she thinks her new album is worth the investment because it’s… audible. Things you won’t find in the questionnaire: Zola Jesus is a 22-year-old Arizona native; her real name is Nika Roza Danilova and she was raised in the backwoods of Wisconsin; she’s married to a bug scientist; and she’s surprisingly petite. That last bit is worth mentioning given the power of her epic wail. On her brilliant and haunting third album, the soon-to-be-released(October 4th) on Sacred Bones Records Conatus, her voice soars and dips, shifting between soaring moments of operatic bravado and dirges of despair. In concert, she leaps and dances on stage with the energy of a pre-rehab pop star. On paper, meanwhile, she’s more like Daria than Gaga.
