While she’s only 18 years old, r&b pop artist Gia has already got a compelling aesthetic and command of her voice, as heard on her recent debut single “Only a Girl.” The track, whose video has already racked up over 400,000 views, gets a chippier, trap-light remix here with ƱZ layering skittering percussion and effervescent synths under the vocals.
“I decided to write around Gia’s vocal,” the producer tells us of his remix. “For the intro I sampled the plucked sound used in the original and played it with an arpeggiator. On the drop I sampled the vocal and then I wrote a funky 808 bass pattern and added my signature hi-hats.”
“The remix is dope!” Gia enthuses. “I definitely think it can broaden the audience that has heard the original. I also like how it uplifts the song and it makes the live performance with me and my dancers more fun. My live set has half the original of ‘Only A Girl’ mixed with half of the ƱZ remix.”
ƱZ, whose ‘Frontier’ EP is out now, appears at the Mad Decent Block Party Chicago date on September 26.
