For filmmakers eager to emulate the surrealist style of David Lynch, your time is now. The acclaimed filmmaker and Twin Peaks creator has revealed plans to lead a course in filmmaking, giving students the opportunity to actually earn a David Lynch MA in Film.
The course will be held at Iowa’s Maharishi University of Management, which seems random until you realize the school was founded by the guy who created Transcendental Meditation, which just so happens to be Lynch’s preferred kind. The University describes the degree on their site:
“The David Lynch Masters in Film program is the first and only Consciousness-Based film education available anywhere. Students learn about deep story and the entire process of filmmaking — from a real-world perspective — while developing their creative potential. The source of creativity within is directly accessed and experienced through daily individual and group practice of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique.”
Sounds about right. For those who don’t know what “consciousness-based” filmmaking means, please refer to any of Lynch’s work and admire the beautiful cinematography and non-linear storylines that confuse, satisfy and awe.
Lynch has consistently remained true to his distinct style despite the many times audiences were unsure of what they’d just seen. And while this whole thing could very likely be a Lynchian performance stunt, surely something mind-blowing will come from the first batch of David Lynch graduates.
Applications will be accepted from November 1st to February 16th.
