Look, we were as tits-over-ass in love with Icona Pop’s “I Love It” as much as the next weekend warrior/film trailer music liaison, but it’s starting to look, with each new release, that they caught lightning in a bottle on that track that isn’t likely to be reproduced.
The thing is, it turns out that a little of that multi-tracked coke cheerleader shouting shtick goes a long way. It’s not helping matters either that they seem to be resorting to building their songs around other people’s hooks now, as on “Girlfriend” from a couple months back. Their latest, “My Party” is essentially a slowed-down, half-assed run through Lesley Gore’s bubblegum pop classic “It’s My Party” with a perfunctory, obfuscated verse from Zebra Katz. Oh well, they had a good run! One sure-fire contender for song of the year under your belt. Nothing to be ashamed about there.
