All summer we’ve seen towering spools of fabric atop pretty heads of models on the runways for Prada, Armani, and Givenchy, to name a few. However, we suspect that this popularized turban trend will breeze right through our Arabian nights love affair and travel into “South African splendour in our hair”, with a new twist on the head wrap. Usually meant to symbolize prosperity and spirituality for the ladies, we predict a modernized version of their traditional headdress will catch on like crazy.
A peek into this Afro-centric trend can be seen in Interview magazine’s recent editorial of Ankara-inspired head wraps styled with Givenchy’s latest collection. Just in time for the trend heat, hit up African Fashion Week for their latest and greatest in NYC this July, and if you still can’t get enough, watch the 1988 African-inspired screen gem, ‘Coming to America’. Nominated at the Academy Awards for best costume design, this film features ladies sporting the most exaggerated, pattern-happy head wraps ever seen on camera.
