It goes without saying that there are many people (most notably Katy Perry) who are unaware of what it means to be “woke.” Luckily the Oxford English Dictionary is here to clear things up. Today the BBC reported that the forthcoming version of the Dictionary will include “woke,” as well as “post-truth.”
Okay so woke was already in the dictionary, but its meaning has been extended beyond simply the state of being awake. “Woke had been extended figuratively to refer to being ‘aware’ or ‘well informed’ in a political or cultural sense,” states the publication’s website. The post goes on to cite Erykah Badu’s song Master Teacher for popularizing the term in recent years.
Here’s hoping that adding “woke” to the dictionary will lead to a mass awakening… however in this post-truth world it seems unlikely.
