Earlier this summer, Chanel released a preview of their Fall/Winter ’16 eyewear campaign featuring Willow Smith, with a few black-and-white photographs, as well as a video of Willow dancing to electro-R&B singer, NAO. Late last night, the iconic brand unveiled the official campaign along with a series of behind-the-scenes photos and videos.
The images, shot by Lagerfeld himself, show Willow looking regal in a pair of eyeglasses, her hair decorated with a Chanel peace sign barette. The behind-the-scenes footage includes polaroids of Smith dancing and taking selfies with Lagerfield, as well as videos of the singer posing for the the legendary designer in the studio.
When Chanel announced Smith would be their newest ambassador back in March, the 15-year-old thanked Lagerfeld for the opportunity. “It’s not everyday a 15-year-old black girl with dreads gets elected to be the Chanel ambassador,” she said, adding in a post on Instagram, “Thank you Karl Lagerfeld and the entire team at Chanel for expanding the perceptions of ‘beauty’ by picking me.”
A fixture in the front-row at every Chanel show the last few seasons, Willow was apparently hand-picked by Lagerfeld for the campaign. After shooting her for V Magazine in 2014, the designer became hypnotized by the youngest Smith’s “youth and energy.” The latest images definitely capture Willow’s spirit, giving the brand a fresher look for fall.
