Real Talk: Who Should Have Played Donatella In Lifetime’s ‘House of Versace’?

We weren't buying Gina Gershon as Donatella Versace in Lifetime's new biopic...

I admit it– I won’t be watching Lifetime’s House of Versace, because ain’t nobody got time for that. For all the money that went into this, I would much rather see a comprehensive documentary on the life of Gianni and Donatella than a glorified Unsolved Mysteries reenactment cloaked in Mob Wives makeup and hair extensions. Unsurprisingly, “the company” (a person, of course) told WWD this morning that the movie is unauthorized, based on previously unauthorized material, and should be considered a “work of fiction”.

Of all the holes it’s not worth poking because we’re talking about a Lifetime movie, one is already standing out as particularly gaping, and that was the casting of Gina Gershon as Donatella Versace. Aesthetically, Gershon skewed more Camille Grammar than haute couture demigoddess, and I am of the opinion that her aura, while she is an amazing actress, lacks the requisite exaggeration to convincingly play the affected, luxury-drenched heiress-cum-designer.

So who should be playing Donatella? My first inclination (think Lifetime movie, not Oscar bait) leans toward either Nicole Richie, Mob Wives’ Love Majewski, or the inimitable Coco, who would bring the added bonus of a possible Ice T cameo. My friend Lil Internet’s votes were David Lee Roth or Genesis P’Orridge, both of whom would be advised to bring their own hair and makeup lest they leave the chair with the Gershon. I also asked up-and-coming casting director Hari Nef for his take for options, which were (in no particular order): Lady Gaga, Asia Argento, Brooke Candy, James Franco, J.Lo, and Jared Leto. Word.

Who would you cast as Donatella in a campy made-for-TV biopic? Drake?

Edit: When this post first went up, I totally thought this already came out. Thankfully, I was up front about the fact that I didn’t watch it, so I don’t feel too bad. Watch the trailer here; the whole thing is out on October 5th:
