Who Are We All ‘Tryna Be’ Asks Toronto Indie-R&B Act Romes In New Video

When we find ourselves in a new city, or even looking at the one we live in a different light, it can be an opportunity to reinvent ourselves. Depending on how we handle it, that could be a change for the good, or a series of tried-on and discarded identities.

That’s the theme of “Tryna Be” from Toronto indie-r&b quartet ROMES, in which a costumed woman dances her way through the late night, and early morning, of New York City.

“The disguised creature outwardly represents the heroine’s internal struggle,” the band said. “‘Who are you tryna be?’ is [vocalist Jacob Bitove] challenging his partner to figure out what she stands for and wants.”

“Unsure about who she is and wants to be, the video reflects her struggle to fit in, whilst trying to stand out,” director Mafalda Millies adds.
