If there’s one thing that I learned playing Super Mario Bros. as a child, it was to take tons of mushrooms all the time, and that you can settle any disagreement by jumping on someone’s head. As you might imagine, I spent a lot of time in trouble. But as it turns out, real life and fantasy video game super-plumbing don’t actually share that many parallels.
Artist Anthony Jones is attempting to bring the two worlds a little closer together in his new series of drawings based on a hypothetical gritty retelling of the video game called “Mario.” The hero, he writes, “is a beat down plumber and leads a lonely but modest life. He can barely pay his rent and is coming off a drug called ‘Star.’ Little does he know that he is destined for great things.”
Also, he’s racist against turtles, Jones probably should’ve added. Toad, on the other hand, looks like every dude you’ve ever met at an outdoor concert festival selling kind shit, man. Wait, maybe that’s what all those giant green pipes in the video game were actually about? Check out the rest of Jones’ frightening sci-fi concept art sketches at Robot Pencil. (via io9)
