“I was immediately attracted to Casey’s vocal delivery and the lyrical content, so I tried to open up as much space as possible within my mix so that her voice could carry the track melodically,” André Obin says of his remix of the CMB track “Under the Chandelier, a song we’ve been listening to on repeat all morning. The result is a track with a solid romantic undercurrent cut through with a sense of taut, building momentum.
The duo of Boston-based acts will perform at the release for CMB’s Three Licks EP on January 29 at the Middle East in Cambridge.
“The atmosphere is subdued, almost an anti-EDM feel,” he goes on. “I really liked the bass line in the original. In order to recreate that line using my synths, I learned how to play it on bass guitar, recorded the live bass, exported that performance as a rough MIDI file, and then cleaned up the MIDI in Ableton for sequencing. That might seem like a lot of work for one element but I do everything by ear and that helps me get the feel right. I think it’s worth it. Ultimately, Casey wrote a beautiful song and I was thrilled to give it my own arrangement and treatment. I think the remix is firm and crystalline, a late night experience.”
