Some artists you have to take seriously. Others, you can’t take seriously at all. Usher is the perfect kind of artist, in that he’s just campy enough—the goldilocks of pop, if you will. In his latest video, Usher sings about having reached the peak in a tumultuous relationship, after which an inevitable anti-climax must follow, while in the visual foreground scenes play of a featureless woman, presumably his ex, getting fucked blind in several rooms of her house, thus reaching her own kind of ‘climax.’ It’s an elaborate, too blunt-to-be-clever visual pun, in the tradition of “Burn” and “Love in This Club.” But as with all Usher videos, it’s all about the detail. Note the hints of pink on the steering wheel and dashboard of Usher’s car, the glib “Cry Me a River” homage. You’ve done it again, Usher, carrying on the manly-sad boy tradition while Justin Timberlake keeps busy with that whole acting thing.
