To commemorate the London opening of “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty,” SHOWstudio launched an online retrospective called, “Unseen McQueen,” centered on the late designer. The series will highlight photographer Nick Knight’s close friendship with McQueen by releasing never-before-seen interviews and unreleased editorials from Knight’s dense archives.
Today, SHOWstudio unveiled a 1998 interview with McQueen, where Knight’s first assistant Sølve Sundsbø asks the London designer about a series of photographs he created with Knight for the Florence Biennale. The footage takes a haunting twist when McQueen discusses a photo the two created, depicting the designer with his head exploding.
“One of the pictures I asked Nick to do was of my head exploding,” McQueen said. “Because that’s how I felt […] It’s not so much violence as it’s confronting the norm. Nothing is violence.” Watch the unreleased clip, below:
