This morning, The Berlin International Film Festival announced that Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups would make its debut in the international competition come February. A few hours later, FilmNation Entertainment released the film’s first trailer, featuring a stellar cast comprised of Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, and Ben Kingsley’s ominous voice. So far, everything looks distinctly Malick: for two minutes we’re transported to a nihilistic L.A. kingdom riff with ego, sexual debauchery, and everlasting youth. From what we’re able to piece together, Knight of Cups seems to be another story of a man confronted with his numerous options, all of which pull him away from the family life that sustains him, while poisoning what’s truly precious. Cate Blanchett embodies stability in Christian Bale’s otherwise tumultuous life, while Natalie Portman plays the perfect other woman. At the end, you’re left wondering whether Christian Bale being trapped in a cage in the middle of a nightclub serves as a powerful metaphor, or melodramatic griping. Watch the trailer below and come to your own conclusion.
