It’s probably beyond this website—or any website, really—to complain about “the way things used to be” with regards to moviemaking. Sure, it’s impressive that special effects used to be created with glue, gum and human know-how, but computer-generated effects are even more effective when used correctly. That said: Check out this footage of the so-called “Bambi Burster” model being test-driven for Alien 3, the David Fincher-directed threequel in the franchise. That it would take so many people to operate is understandable, given the range of motion require to make the thing look realistic. But I’m struck by just how realistic it looks—realistic for a fictional alien-dog hybrid, of course—and feel like it would make an excellent addition to some charity auction, because what would make a better set piece with which to terrify your friends and family at the holidays? Ugh, just look at it shiver like it’s got alien pneumonia—kind of cute, totally horrifying.
