The Simpsons opening couch sequences have long defined the show’s experimental and madcap approach to animation and have been used to convey both powerful social metaphors and situational irony. Last night on the Season 26 (!!!) premiere, things just got plain weird. Independent cartoonist Don Hertzfeldt, who was nominated back in 2001 for his animated short Rejected, directed this wildly unsettling bit involving Homer teleporting back in time, and then into the deep future, and subsequently evolving into an alien life form. Things get even trippier when Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie all show up as amorphous creatures with various body parts growing out of them, as lettering on the screen reads, “All Animals Can Scream.” It’s bizarre and brilliant.
