For years, I’ve been trying to convince my reluctant friends that they need to put down the trashy summer pulp and read more Tolstoy. As you can imagine, I’m a lot of fun at parties. War and Peace and Anna Karenina are basically Jane Austen domestic dramas, what with the conflict over high society mores, the constant worrying over which rich family has enough money to keep up their lifestyle, and which handsome young gentleman is a suitable match for the heroines, I’d say. Except then lots more people get murdered. It’s a sort of beta version of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies you might say, if you were kind of dumb. This new trailer for the forthcoming film adaptation of Anna Karenina, directed by Joe Wright, may just serve as a quick shorthand for my argument; it stars Kiera Knightley, Elizabeth Bennet herself, after all. Not to mention Jude Law, Kelly MacDonald, Aaron Johnson, Olivia Williams, and Downton Abbey‘s Michelle Dockery, aka the best collection of eyebrows caught on film in history.
