If you still don’t know what #gamergate is by this point, turn right the hell around, close out of this browser tab, and go on about your day. By this point it’s become such a Lovecraftian nightmare that even perceiving its visage is enough to drive otherwise sane men to raving.
OK, the rest of you still here? Let’s do this one more time.
As Stephen Colbert explained last night, it “involves some male gamers harassing women who are speaking out about the portrayal of women in video games. Presumably after the initial shock that women were speaking to them at all.”
That’s more or less it. Although the members of the “movement” that’s not a movement but somehow still is, claim it’s ACTUALLY about ethics in video game journalism.
Among the most prominent of the critics of video games is Anita Sarkeesian, who’s taken a huge brunt of the abuse online, including threats of violence. Sarkeesian appeared on the show last night, where Colbert highlighted the absurdity of the #gamergate argument by merely stating it out loud:
“Let’s call this what it is. You and the other Feminiazis in the gamer world are coming for our balls to snip them off, put them in a little felt purse, and take them way so we have to play your non-violent games.”
