Watch Spike Jonze Confront Interviewer Over the Meaning of ‘Her’

+

As the Oscars approach, Spike Jonze is still doing press for his love story, Her, this time on the BBC’s Newsnight. What could have been yet a bland rehash of the hundreds of interviews he’s done, got interesting when right off the bat, the filmmaker questioned whether his interviewer, Emily Maitlis, had even seen the movie. Apparently what irked Jonze was Maitlis’ referring to the idea of “falling in love with your software,” which, in her defense, is the general premise of the movie. But Jonze wanted her to dig deeper: The movie’s more of a love story and a relationship story,” he shot back.

Jonze, clearly fed up with the promotional grind, spends the rest of the interview hassling Maitlis for her opinion on the movie—while sweetly calling her by her first name—while she robotically refuses.

Afterwords, Maitlis unloaded on the movie over Twitter instead of to Jonze directly, probably because she dislikes interesting television.
