Watch Penn Badgley Cover Jeff Buckley Live

Penn Badgley was announced as the lead in competing Jeff Buckley biopic , Greetings from Tim Buckley, a while back. You might’ve assumed that all that role demanded of Badgley was flouncing about dramatically for two hours while occasionally lip syncing. Well apparently that ain’t the case, as Badgley appeared this past weekend at the Cameo Gallery in New York, playing a few songs and opening for the Cribs’ Ryan Jarman.  Badgley’s set included three Jeff Buckley covers, among them a cover of a Buckley’s rendition of “Lilac Wine” by Nina Simone. What’s funny though, is that Greetings from Tim Buckley doesn’t have the rights to use any of Jeff Buckley’s music, so none of the songs that Badgley sang this weekend will appear in the film. So what music will the filmmakers use in a biopic about a musician? We don’t know, but maybe they’ll be thrifty and just stick to songs in the public domain; think of how exciting it would be to hear Badgley apply that soulful voice to “The Bells of St. Mary’s” or “Give My Regards to Broadway.”
