Mykki Blanco is way more than a rapper, but this is certainly no new development. In the same year Blanco released his first official single and music video, he also published a book of poetry called, “From the Silence of Duchamp to the Noise of Boys.” Though it’s no longer being printed, Blanco hasn’t completely abandoned his literary roots for the entertainment industry. Last summer, the Gay Dog Food emcee attended a writing residency at Galeria Zé Dos Bois in Lisbon, Portugal, and gave a fantastic solo performance called, “Baby Steps: How To Heal Yourself From Everyday Psychic Poisons or Repentance for Dummies.”

Highlights of Blanco’s presentation include him manically running around the stage growling, “the future is stupid,” and honestly breaking down his journey as a young, black cross-dresser. “There were men I was sleeping with, that I was living with, that had no idea my name was Michael,” he confesses. “There were prostitutes that I was hanging out with, and God bless them, but they weren’t the best influences. I really, really opened Pandora’s box and it became a new way of life, and it was a beautiful thing for me because had I not experienced those things, I would not have the perspectives that I have on misogyny or on how women are treated, or on how transgender people are treated in society.” Watch part one and part two, below:
