Mariah Carey’s career, once built on the singer’s superhuman vocals, has become a bottomless pit of viral memes and a sea of YouTube videos that leave us questioning if her heydays are long gone. (See: Carey’s iconic 2008 GMA performance of “Touch My Body”).
Granted, there was the small glimmer of hope when she dropped her soaring single, “Infinity,” but even that experience felt like admiring the work of a cute, promising toddler from the perspective of a wine-drunk aunt. “That’s so Mariah,” we whispered happily to ourselves, before indulging in our monthly viewing session of “Mariah Carey Needs a Moment” over a glass of Pinot Noir.
During Hot 97’s “Hot For The Holidays” concert over the weekend, Busta Rhymes brought the diva onstage for a throwback performance of 2003’s “I Know What You Want.” Donning an all-black outfit that we haven’t seen since, well, 2003, 45-year-old Carey painfully worked her way through the track. She squeaked and squawked, seemingly unfazed by the shaky, less-than-desirable sound spilling from her holy vocal chords.
The entire performance looks hilariously similar to a pair of over-served parents at Christmas dinner, ultimately giving new meaning to “Hot For The Holidays.” Watch, below:
