North Carolina’s controversial House Bill 2, aka “the bathroom law” has come under fire from all corners, and seen a number of high profile musicians, like Bruce Springsteen, cancel shows in the state in protest. Last night, Laura Jane Grace of Against Me!, the trans punk performer, took a different tact. Instead of canceling a show in a state that has now legitimized discrimination against people like her, saying that people would have to use bathrooms that correspond to their gender identity on their birth certificates, Grace burned hers on stage.
“The way you affect change is by empowering the grassroots movement,” she said. “By empowering the people.”
