Ultra-chill Angeleno chamber poppist Julia Holter lulled audiences this spring with her sophomore release Ekstasis, and now she’s released a video for album highlight “Our Sorrows.” Directed by Galaxie 500’s Naomi Yang, the clip mostly features Holter walking around Los Angeles with a magenta ribbon, enlisting people to help her unroll it and playing with a bowl of water. Yang had this to say about the clip:
In the opening scenes of the video Julia is wondering, questioning, trying to divine her future. She sets out onto the streets of Los Angeles, weaving a magenta ribbon throughout the neighborhoods. Perhaps using the ribbon as a marker to find her way home, perhaps as a visual metaphor for weaving together her experiences. Or perhaps she has just decided, for no good reason, that she wants to thread this ribbon through the city.
It sort of makes you wonder if everytime you’ve watched a music video and had no clue what was going on, your confusion was simply due to the creators using an approach as indistinct as this one.
