Back when HBO first announced True Detective, its new cop show starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, it seemed almost too good to be true: two of America’s best and twangiest movie actors in a serialized drama about cops tracking a serial killer. Yes, please. Now we have the first full trailer, which teases a series that will not only be beautifully acted (duh) but beautifully photographed as well. The director is Cary Fukunaga, who last made the highly stylized big-screen adaptation of Jane Eyre, so the crisp, Gothic look is no surprise. The clip doesn’t give away too much, but based on McConaughey’s shifting hair-length, the narrative will jump back and forth through time, as it tells the story of the detectives’ 17-year hunt to catch a killer. The show premiers in January.
