Florence + the Machine have acquired a taste for releasing dark, moody music videos, some of which veer into accidental racism when they’re not establishing Florence’s cred as a Serious Artist. This video for “Never Let Me Go,” off of last year’s Ceremonials, isn’t that offensive, thank God. An appearance by Twilight star Jamie Campbell Bower (Caius, in case you didn’t kn0w) goes a long way towards building the video’s spooky vibe, as he and Florence ice skate in a darkened rink under a shifting spotlight. All the while, her face is covered in some kind of black dripping gunk which is totally gross but we’ll forgive it because, after all, Florence Welch is a Serious Artist. You may think that the part where she melts into the ice goes a bit too far, but no one would ever accuse it of not going far enough. Credit her for sticking to an ethos, which is “I am ridiculous.”
Don’t blame Florence for getting too ambitious, because she’s everywhere these days. Yesterday, she announced an MTV Unplugged live album, recorded last December, which includes a cover of Otis Redding’s “Try A Little Tenderness” and a duet on Johnny Cash’s “Jackson” with Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme (odd pairing, but it sounds interesting). Kanye West was in attendance at the show, so maybe if you listen really carefully you can hear him griping to his date about not being asked to the stage. (Just kidding: He went by himself. No man, woman or child is allowed to sit next to Kanye, unless it’s Jay-Z, Jay-Z’s wife, or Jay-Z’s baby.)
Florence also showed up on a recently released Game of Thrones trailer, an immensely sensible pairing considering their mutual sensibilities. She could show up in Westeros as herself and no one would really blink an eye, would they?
