Beth Ditto is back with a vengeance. Following the seriously exciting news of her debut solo record, out this June, the former Gossip frontwoman has dropped a stunning new video for her first single, “Fire.” Featuring a reverse motion bar brawl and an Elvis-style suit, the video channels Ditto’s Southern roots, with cowboy hats and a vicious two-step. Directed by Price James, the visual matches the dirty Americana of “Fire” itself, a cutting track filled with hard rock riffs and classic country tropes that show Ditto paying tribute to her past. Titled Fake Sugar, the album builds upon the Southern theme as a self-described mix of “punk, blues, malt-shop pop, swooning rock and countrified soul.”
“I was running away from the bad parts of Southern culture,” said Ditto, in a press release. “I’m old enough now and so grateful for my family that I can finally embrace the good in where I grew up.”
With heavy guitars and Ditto’s lusty vocals, “Fire” is the perfect place to start. And since we can’t be in a real bar for another few hours, watching Ditto start a fight, is the next best thing.
