As we’ve learned time and time again, a badass premise does not always make for a good sci-fi or horror movie. See: Cowboys & Aliens, Alien vs. Predator, or aliens vs. anything really, for evidence. The last half dozen Will Smith films, too, come to think of it. But if there’s anyone whose inner-fan boy doesn’t squeal with delight over the idea of one of our country’s most revered figures chopping the heads off of vampires with an extendable hatchet weapon on top of a moving train, all while fighting to end slavery and preserve the union, well then maybe you just don’t believe in the magic of imagination anymore.
It’s hard to tell from this first clip from the forthcoming summer film Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, the adaptation of the book by Pride and Prejudice and Zombies author Seth Grahame-Smith, whether or not we’re in for a letdown, or if it will live up to our expectations. On the one hand it seems really heavy handed with the CGI effects, but on the other, those effects are Abraham effing Lincoln fighting vampires.
