Björk has been a pioneering advocate for virtual reality, having already released a variety of VR music videos and her own virtual reality exhibit, as well as participating in a press conference via VR. Now the singer has released the first teaser for her upcoming virtual reality film, Family.
In collaboration with Andrew Thomas Huang, the filmmaker with whom she made her “Black Lake” and “Stonemilker” VR videos, Family showcases Björk’s excitement over the emerging technology to the centerpiece track off her 2015 album, Vulnicura.
“The story of the piece is about a woman who journeyed to see the Icelandic landscape to sew herself back together through, out of heartbreak, towards transcendence and empowerment,” said Huang. “We got actual motion-capture of Björk, so her presence is there in the piece.”
The full work will be on view at Björk Digital, the artist’s immersive virtual reality exhibit that’s currently on tour across the world. To promote the film, Björk will be doing a DJ appearance at the Red Bull Music Academy Montreal tonight and tomorrow. RBMA Radio will livestream the experience, running from 10 PM EST through midnight.
