Internet trolls are those faceless fire starters we all genuinely hate—the pestering gutter rats of the digital world with seemingly purposeless pursuits beyond probing just to probe. Creating fictional, satiric identities on Instagram, for example, seems like something a jobless baby adult might engage in within the creepy confines of his mother’s basement, but for one everyday man (and probably many more) it’s simply an outlet for innocent entertainment—still weird, though.
In a video brought to you by Rebtel, VICE pulled one proud troll from the computer and asked him to “Speak Freely,” explaining the facets of his favorite anonymous pastime in, “Confessions of an Internet Troll.” The subject, eerily masked to achieve peak troll status, details his anti-Instagram profile, which centers on a made-up character who posts his daily kill, as a negative response to most users’ bragging aesthetic.
“It’s a compulsion now,” he admits. “It’s really, it’s nothing more than an addiction.” He continues, explaining how being an Internet Troll has gravely affected his personal relationships. “Cause people think that I’m doing is immoral and they’re not wrong.”
