The road to Paris fashion week is long and hard, but that didn’t stop Walter Van Beirendonck from having a ball with his SS 14 collection. While the Belgian Van Beirendonck’s designs sometimes share a similar vein with those of his German contemporary, Bernhard Willhelm, this season’s footman-cum-glam-rocker was a bit more buttoned up. One of the standout looks was a jutting, 3-dimensional tuxedo shirt– or even a dickie?– with what appeared to be stiff lapels that I’d suspect were either starched or had boning.
Is the collection wearable? Some might accuse Van Beirendonck of being hard-headed in his quest for uniqueness, but this totally nuts collection of appliqued blazers and sheer turtlenecks actually softens right up when you break it down piece by piece. Just as you were starting to ween yourself off of color and return to monochrome, this collection came around to blow your whole perspective– perhaps a bit of a dick move on the part of the designer.
