You should not be tricked into thinking Waka Flocka Flame cares, not ever. Why else would he release a new single on Friday of all days, when the hype machine is at its weekly lowest? “I Don’t Really Care,” featuring Trey Songz of “I Invented Sex” fame, is the type of pop-rap crossover that should make Waka’s upcoming sophomore album a bigger deal. Right after Songz opens up the track with an auto-tuned hook, Flocka rips through like Godzilla, shouting about how he’s throwing dick and drunk as hell, as he always should be. There’s room for listeners of all kinds.
Honest question: Does Songz outshine Waka on his own song? It’s hard to hold it against Waka for not going 190 MPH all the time, especially when there’s ripe sex symbol territory to farm by partnering with the lothario R&B singer. But he’s on just half the song, rapping with the kind of restrained fervor befitting of an artist trying to break big rather than delve further into his well-established persona. We’ll see if the broader approach holds up over an entire album, or if Waka caves and gives the people what they really want: his name, barked multiple times like it’s the end of the world. Triple F Life: Friends, Fans and Family is due in mid-April.
(This is as good a time as any to point out Waka’s recent ads for PETA, which seem like a questionable choice in cross-branding. Who’s going to see this and say, “Well, I was going to get that fur but Flocka said…”?)
