Just when you thought the world had maybe, finally reached peak IKEA, the brand taps Off-White designer (and Kanye West creative director) Virgil Abloh to make a conceptual, minimalist riff on the iconic FRAKTA bag. That’s right, there’s a new designer IKEA bag in town, and this time, it’s not a four-figure Balenciaga.
Abloh and IKEA announced the collaboration on Instagram today, following a teaser last week. The bag appears to be made of a brown, cardboard-like material that’s sturdier than the traditional blue plastic. Gone too are those IKEA-branded handles, which have been replaced with a crossbody strap in either solid blue or yellow. Oh, and “SCULPTURE” is emblazoned across the side of the bag. Get it?
“IKEA provides a landscape — fertile soil for new ideas and concepts. My duty then, is to provide something provocative. Given how tremendous this opportunity is, I’m not content to make another chair. I love working with the best in class of any genre. IKEA is a brand that spans generations — that stands for something. To give this collection a young approach and pay respect to that DNA is my goal,” Abloh said in a statement.
As High Snobiety notes, it sounds like the IKEA/Abloh partnership may ultimately reach beyond bags. On its website, IKEA notes that “together, IKEA and OFF-WHITE look for ways to help create a home for millennials who are just starting out their lives.”
Either way, it seems like IKEA has decided to take their 15 minutes in the fashion spotlight and run with it.
