The themes of Ontario’s Basia Bulat music are frequently inward-looking, but the sound of songs like “Tall Tall Shadow”, the title track of her new album, is anything but. The song builds from a contemplative confession to a resounding, defiant fanfare of stomping drums, cresting organs, and dance-away-the-blues energy.
Tall Tall Shadow (co-produced with Tim Kingsbury of Arcade Fire and The Suburbs engineer Mark Lawson), is out today on Secret City Records.
The video is a kaleidoscopic mirroring of Bulat’s expressive performance and the idea of running from your own shadow at the heart of the song.
Bulat told us more about its making.
“As the days were getting shorter and summer was coming to a close I flew to Berlin to work with director Stephanie Comilang on a video for ‘Tall Tall Shadow.’ We holed up in a studio with her creative team in Kreuzberg and didn’t see daylight for 48-hours. We made a secret, lo-fi dance club for ourselves and brought a forgotten camera and lost tapes back to life. We left with a video of light and shadows, equal parts a throwback to VHS and analogue techniques and an homage to a few of our favorite artists.”
