VH1 Releases First TLC Biopic Trailer; Will It Do Its Subjects Justice?

Are the cast members of VH1's upcoming TLC biopic going to be able to give the performances that T-Boz, Chilli and Left Eye deserve?

VH1 has released the first trailer for their upcoming TLC biopic, CrazySexyCool, which consists primarily of the cast reenacting two music videos (“Waterfalls” and “No Scrubs”), a concert, and some popular news footage from the “Hat 2 Da Back” era. I always have mixed feelings about this type of made-for-TV biopic because they never seem to do their subjects justice, redundantly offering up budget interpretations of stars’ past work while shining little new light on the interpersonal complexities that viewers are really tuning in for.

The flick, due to hit screens in October, first hit headlines after one-hit rapper Lil’ Mama was cast as deceased icon Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes (Chilli and T-Boz will be played by actresses Keke Palmer and Drew Sidora, respectively). It’ll be interesting to see how crowds react to the finished product, which better end up more poppin’ than Lil’ Mama’s lip gloss if it expects to placate die-hard Left Eye fans and both tastefully and accurately represent her legacy.

Are you excited to see CrazySexyCool when it comes out? The trailer was cute, but it made us want to watch real TLC music videos and interviews, not a movie that so far seems more like adults playing dress-up in the garb of a group that we all grew up listening to. And while I’m not sure it’s fair to expect nuance from VH1, in this particular case it seems only right that this legendary girl group is shown the respect that they’re due. Guess we’ll just have to tune in to see…
