If imitation is the highest form of flattery, what does it say about someone if they ripoff themselves? I think that means they’re either self-obsessed or seriously brilliant. For Vetements, I’d say it’s a combination of both. This weekend, the insanely hyped streetwear brand dropped an “official fake” knockoff of their black raincoat, following parody brand Vetememes‘ lead.
Instead of suing their imitators, Vetements beat the knockoff line at their own game, releasing the fake raincoat for $200 and selling out in minutes. With the word “raincoat” on the front, and its definition on the back, the self-aware “official fake” gives copycat a whole new, meta meaning: Vetements ripped off Vetememes who copies Vetements to begin with—it’s all too confusing for a Monday. But I guess, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em—or in Vetements case, join ’em and “officially” kick their ass.
