Unsung Pop Hero Heidi Montag Returns to the Stage

+

Remember when The Hills’ Heidi Montag attempted a career as “pop star,” and blew $2 million to achieve a failed “P!nk meets Britney Spears” sound? The world’s temporary obsession with Montag and husband Spencer Pratt—famously nicknamed “Speidi”—is to blame for letting her believe she had real pop potential, and ultimately helped spawn her 2010 full-length debut, Superficial.

Despite a big live (“live”) performance on Miss Universe a year prior to its release, Montag’s breakout (“breakout”) album moved only 1,000 units in its first week and didn’t come close to making back the $2 million she invested in production. Although Superficial was a critical and commercial flop, it’s still somehow managed to have lasting cult-like clout among poptimists, from Montag’s swirling club track, “Turn Ya Head,” to her bouncy revenge anthem, “Look How I’m Doing.”

Returning to the stage, pop underdog Montag recently made an appearance at The Abbey in West Hollywood, where she revived her single, “Body Language,” in an outfit that’s probably gone untouched since Superficial dropped 6 years ago. It’s been some time since those pleather leggings were socially acceptable, styled here with a lace top likely from Montag’s party girl days—very fun.

“Read my body language,” she proudly mimes—eyes closed with glee—as she blissfully imagines what it might’ve felt like if her career had taken off. Watch Montag’s big revival, below, and take note of The Abbey’s resident Queen looking hilariously unimpressed throughout:
