As we saw with the controversy surrounding the Italian advertisements for 12 Years a Slave that prominently featured Brad Pitt’s face last year, European countries aren’t much better when it comes to contending with the idea of our country’s history of slavery than we are. A display spotted this week at a shop in England is the latest tone deaf presentation of the harrowing film.
For some reason that no one can explain, a Sainbury’s shop in Oxford made the decision to dress up their sale of the DVDs with a stylishly arranged slave mannequin. As the Independent points out, “Looking defiantly summer-ready, the mannequin wears a loose-fitting, holey beige shirt and black trousers, completing the look with a twig in the front pocket.”
While the outfit in question is really kind of bad ass, and may be the harbinger of this season’s hot #slavecore look, it probably goes without saying that this is just a really weird way to advertise a film about the horrors of slavery.
