Remember the most amazing video of all time? THE BIGGEST TWEKING FAIL EVER? No? It was just like two days ago. Yeah, it was a big thing, we all agreed. But it turns out that the twerking girl who caught herself on fire was, much like everything else in the world that seems true and good, a big lie.
“To the conspiracy theorists on the internet who thought the video was fake, you were right,” Jimmy Kimmel explained on his show last night.
“It’s probably some sort of shitty viral marketing stunt,” said some prescient genius around here, “but so is literally everything else so it doesn’t matter.”
It doesn’t matter, does it? Kimmel’s point, it could be argued, is something about how gullible the news media is now, but is that even a revelation? You might even say a stunt like this only exacerbates the problem. Anyone who is going to be intelligent enough to get the criticism of viral content culture already knows the entire mechanism for sharing information is a sham. Everyone else won’t ever even learn that it was fake. Isn’t that what we’re arguing against here? Shoveling shit onto the internet that people will share because they want to believe it’s true?
Either way, let’s all definitely go tune into Jimmy Kimmel now and subscribe to his social media channels.
