Besides the chance to see a bunch of great acts in one place, the appeal of the summer music festival season definitely draws from the extra-lengths that acts sometimes go to in order to entertain the massive, sun-baked crowds that have been on their feet for hours, and last night at Coachella, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg didn’t pull any punches in their night-closing set.
Probably taking advice from Anderson Cooper or something, Dr. Dre and Snoop included a hologram of Tupac in last night’s performance, and, looking more than a little like he escaped from Resident Evil, Holo-pac sauntered around the stage, raised his arms a lot and eventually performed “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted” with Snoop.
Some say it’s touching, some say it’s creepy. Did it turn the memory of a real human being into an exploitative spectacle? Maybe, but that probably wasn’t the intention; it’s all too befitting of the personalities of Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre to give the boldest performance possible, and for some people guest spots from the living (in this case Eminem, 50 Cent, Wiz Khalifa and Kendrick Lamar) just aren’t enough.
Looking at the smile on Snoop’s face, it’s easy to see it as a fitting tribute; maybe those who were creeped out should just be happy that we’re still years away from the technology in Virutosity.
