They say it takes a village to raise a child. But for Merrill Garbus, and her music project, tUnE-YaRdS, it took no more than a bit of life experience and a ukulele. A former puppeteer and nanny, Garbus’ self released debut album as tUnE-YaRdS, BiRd-BrAiNs, was recorded on a recycled cassette tape using a handheld voice recorder. With the success of April’s w h o k i l l, her follow-up studio release, Garbus’ unruly stylings and bold voice have made her an unlikely star. Her DIY style, wild strawberry locks, and signature face paint are anything but manufactured.
We caught up with Garbus between gigs on her North American tour, and found out that she’s just as quirky, carefree, and down-to earth on paper. Plus, she uses the word “DuDe.”
