Considering the psychological turmoil and perpetual threat of menace at the heart of the story of Gone Girl, the upcoming film based on the smash hit novel of the same name, Trent Reznor, whose music with Nine Inch Nails has long trafficked in similar thematic territory, seems like a natural fit to soundtrack the film. As he has before, Reznor has partnered here with English composer and producer Atticus Ross for their third David Fincher-directed film, the previous being the respectively Oscar and Grammy winning scores for The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Befitting the film’s tone, the soundtrack here — with evocative song titles like “With Suspsicion”, “Technically, Missing”, and “Secrets” — is a largely pensive affair, with the dull, distant, and sustained aural tones humming beneath plaintive piano lines and somber, low end strings. “Procedural” is one highlight, with its bubbling chime notes and far off razor edged guitar line howling in the distance.
