In a world where the most familiar fear is of becoming an adult, Our Idiot Brother may end up being the seminal text of a generation. If the spot hasn’t already been filled by Tiny Furniture.
The lives of three sisters–Elisabeth Banks (of BULLETT Winter issue fame), Zooey Deschanel (everyone’s least favorite) and Emily Mortimer–are thrown into chaos with the re-introduction of a violent male energy–in the form of Paul Rudd, a weed selling, peace-loving Mr. Magoo type who has yet to take up residency in the Adult World. After a jail stint, he moves in, husbands freak out, lives fall apart–hilariously.
There’s much that is predictable in the trailer alone, and much to appreciate. The cast is a magnificent ‘fuck you’ to Judd Apatow–and simultaneously a Judd Apatow wet dream. Zooey and Rashida play gay–which puts them in the running with Julianne Moore and Annette Benning as least convincing lesbian pairing ever.
It could be a kind of Interiors gone right–waspy yet liberal sisters on a rampage. It could even be really good, for all the right reasons. Or it could be good for the simple reason that our perennial crush/obsession Steve Coogan is in it, whose film appearances are way too few and far between.
In any case, we’ll be there.
