Edward Cullen as a French ne’er do well? Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci in the same room? Declan Donnellan’s Bel-Ami may be fraught with the possibility of mishap, but still it is cause for rejoice, since we can’t recall when or if Maupassant has ever graced the big screen since Stagecoach. A shock, considering Hollywood loves any excuse to put its most bankable leading men in faint mutton chops and nankeen trousers. In this case, it’s a marraige of convenience between Robert Pattinson, that most vanilla of bad boys, and one of the weirdest (and best) authors of the 19th century, albeit in one of his more conventional stories. Georges Duroy, the social climber of Bel Ami, rises through the ranks of Parisian society by courting its most powerful and sexually unfulfilled married ladies. These being the somewhat adventurously cast Christina Ricci, Uma Thurman and the divine Kristin Scott Thomas, who all look more than passable in petticoats. We’ll be there, if only to wipe away the image of Pattinson-cum-crocodile lodged in our heads by that horrible Vanity Fair cover
